Design & INNOVATION (CeM)

PROFESSORS: MARIANA SOLÍS, ELENA AMATO, JOEL OLGUÍN, ANTONIO DEL ALMO, OLIVER GÓMEZ, OMAR ROSALES

The fourth-semester students have designed a series of objects that function as shelters, spaces for interspecies coexistence, or as tools that encourage human-bird relationships. Individually, each student observed and studied a specific bird species to create a design that responds to its characteristics and needs within an urban environment where green areas and non-human-friendly spaces are scarce. This project fosters interspecies empathy, responsible design, and the regeneration of connections with nature in urban contexts.

Amani

Regina García

A set of three breakfast pieces designed from paper pulp. Brisa is a sugar bowl that offers greater control to the diner. Alba is a biscuit holder that allows for an aesthetically pleasing presentation of accompaniments. Oleaje is a modular cutlery holder that designates a place for the coffee spoon and butter knife on the table. Inspired by the air, sea, and sand, it honors the connection created with our loved ones during breakfast.

Its versatility allows it to be used in various spaces, whether at home, in restaurants, or in both indoor and outdoor settings.

OASIS

Mauricio Ramírez

Oasis is a hummingbird feeder designed to minimize the risk of contamination commonly found in traditional feeders. Thoughtfully integrated into the garden, it is inserted into soil whether in pots or directly in the ground blending seamlessly with the natural environment. As it becomes yet another "flower" along the bird’s path, Oasis offers both functionality and harmony with the surrounding ecosystem.

NUDOS

Alexa Paredes

Nudos is a hanging feeder designed for lesser goldfinches, functioning as a space for social interaction while offering an alternative to human-imposed captivity. The piece honors the birds’ innate sociability and freedom, incorporating subtle visual cues such as movement with the wind that signal safety and invitation.

Through its form and intention, Nudos becomes both refuge and celebration of avian community.
