DESIGN PROJECT 3 (CEM)
PROFESSOR HUITZI MARÍN
PRETEXT
What makes a product luxurious? Pretexts such as the material, manufacturing process, origin, symbolism, among others. The students explored these pretexts to find particular cases of interest such as: a technique of a specific origin, an extraordinary material or a trend in the sector. Around these themes, they designed innovative objects, with commercial potential and an identity of their own.
PROCESS: URDIDO (HAMMOCK WEAVING)
Valeria Alarcón
The project explores the importance of manufacturing processes in luxury products. I found that a common process in Mexico with the potential to create relevant products for the future of the sector in the country is Urdido, an artisanal technique that, due to the materials utilized and the expertise required to be executed, delivers products of great value.
As a result, a decorative lamp whose shade is woven with the hammock technique in an elegant and innovative piece that enhances the use of this Mexican artisanal technique.
PROCESS: LONÉVILLE
Ninidedt Romero
Thanks to the interest in the importance of processes in luxury products, was born a project that finds it’s base in Lunéville embroidery, a technique of the highest level of quality and technical rigor that intervenes the most select piecesof couture with rhinestones.
The proposal consists of innovating haute couture by bringing Lunéville together with an object that is almost unnoticed by most people: socks. Thus, a new concept was created that turns a basic garment into an object of worship and desire.
PROCESS: BERBER KNOT
Andrea Espejel
The project was born from the intention of using manufacturing processes that, due to their origin, material and expertise, had a direct dialogue with the luxury sector. Berber traditions and their knotting technique represent great importance in luxury interiors, creating high-quality collectibles.
The project applies the process to a small furniture piece that enhances the everyday exoticism. The fabric is made with merino wool on a black cowhide base, the structure is metallic and finished with white painting..
MATERIAL: NOPAL LEATHER
Joanna Wolff
A clutch bag, designed from the sustainable luxury trend and the importance of the symbolism of this accessory within the luxury sector. This bag is created with vegan leather made from nopal fiber, and its design arises from the exploration of geometric shapes that manage to create the perfect harmony between classic and contemporary.
It seeks to adapt to various contexts and styles, which is why it works with an easy-to-fix strap made from embedded neodymium magnetsthat, thanks to its power, allow the strap to function as a handle..
MATERIAL: PRECIOUS MATERIALS + RESIN
Armando Guadarrama
The selection of materials plays an important role in the design of luxury products. They range from the most classic such as precious stones and metals, to the more exotic ones such as fragments of moonstone or dinosaur bones.
The project proposes to capture these materials in an object of daily use: resin buttons. With this perspective, the user can carry unusual materials with them either in the traditional use as a button, or in the form of a versatile jewel.
PROCESS: STAINED GLASS
Axel Eguiarte
The project proposes to revalue a process with an important role in classic luxury: the realization of stained glass windows. A technique associated with religious mysticism, creating atmospheres of power and magic. The proposal brings together this artisan technique with a form of modern luxury: streetwear.
The design proposal consists on a stained glass visor, which generates, from this technique, an atmosphere of iridescence and refractions of color on the skin
PROCESS: WICKER WEAVING
Miranda Correa
The project starts from the interest in understanding the popular processes of Mexico that can be used on the creation of high-level products. The research led the project towards wicker; a natural material intricately woven and with great opportunities for innovation.
The proposal is made up of a series of indoor lamps with natural and casual shapes that emit a warm light that refers to the peace and comfort of everyday luxury.
SYMBOLISM: POWER
Carlos Avilés
One of the ultimate goals of luxury products is symbolism and the expression of values, such as power. The project explores as a concept, the analogy between the power of a weapon and the power of a signature. They say that the written word (and its effects) prevails even after the last soldier has fallen, and that the signature of a single powerful man can change the lives of many for better or for worse.
The project proposes a resin pen with precious metal details inspired by a samurai sword, to invite us to reflect: can a pen be more powerful than a weapon?
