Maize is an essential part of the mexican culture. For generations it has been of utmost importance for the Mexican economy and gastronomy. However, its production and use have become industrialized, distancing it from everyday use.
Through several explorations a collection of objects and materials were developed, which promote the use of maize through different elements; either using it as a material (olote, totomoxtle, masa) or with products intended for its consumption. Maíz Cotidiano is a collection that encompasses areas such as construction materials, utilitarian objects and learning processes with the purpose of increasing the accessibility and use of maize on a day-to-day basis.

Maize is part of our culture and heritage as Mexicans. Moreover, its consumption in our society has been left aside and is usually limited to gastronomy.
Our purpose is to encourage the use of maize at home and invite everyone to see it as a material and not a mere ingredient. Having this in mind a series of containers were developed in order to create moldable dough, while only using biodegradable products which can be found in any Mexican home, such as: cornstarch, maize flour, and salt. In this manner, we will be ecologically responsible whilst giving another usage to one of the most emblematic raw materials of our country.
TORTILLA CUTTER

Tortillas are a very important element in Mexican cuisine, in many places they are completely made by hand. There are multiple devices that ease this task, for example, the tortilla press. Nevertheless, this is a very popular product in Mexico but unknown and sometimes wrongly used in foreign countries. This cutter is an accessory that fits into a standard rolling pin in order to create tortilla-sized cuts. The rolling pin is a product that can easily be found not only in Mexican kitchens, but also in the ones from many other cultures. This way, the production of handmade tortillas can be a little closer to everyone.
TORTILLA PRESS, COMAL, AND TONGS

Tortillas are an extension of Mexico. ¿Who doesn’t want a good taco with a fresh tortilla? Sometimes, is really hard to find a good fresh tortilla being out of Mexico. Based on the design of a traditional tortilla press, this culinary object is focused on bringing to the table a traditional and easy-practical way to make tortillas. Perfect for those who want to taste a piece of Mexico no matter where they are.
TOTOMOXTLE FIBER

Totomoxtle fiber is a natural alternative to replace conventional, artificial and synthetic fibers. It achieves a flexibility, hardness, resistance and grip necessary for different industries. Its main uses can be: in the textile industry, decorations and furniture.
NIXTAMALIZATION

The consumption of corn has been important in our culture proof of this are the different preparations that can be made with it. One of the most important and of great value is nixtamalization because its preparation is a ritual. We are inspired by its process from two questions: Why don't we nixtamalize in our homes anymore? And why isn't there an object in the kitchen to help us nixtamalize?. In this way we develop a set of objects that allows us to nixtamalize in our homes, in contemporary Mexican kitchens or in general any kitchen in the world to obtain our dough.
CEPILLO

As part of the Maíz Cotidiano collection, I developed this object that allows the user to create a brush with the totomoxtle.
