DESING & INNOVATION (CEM)

Design & INNOVATION (CeM)

PROFESSORS: MARIANA SOLÍS, ELENA AMATO, JOEL OLGUÍN, ANTONIO DEL ALMO, OLIVER GÓMEZ, OMAR ROSALES

The fourth-semester students have designed a series of objects that function as shelters, spaces for interspecies coexistence, or as tools that encourage human-bird relationships. Individually, each student observed and studied a specific bird species to create a design that responds to its characteristics and needs within an urban environment where green areas and non-human-friendly spaces are scarce. This project fosters interspecies empathy, responsible design, and the regeneration of connections with nature in urban contexts.

Amani

Regina García

Amani seeks to provide the Mexican finch with healthy materials for building its nests, through an object that fosters interaction between the bird and humans. By facilitating access to these resources, the project supports both the bird’s nesting process and the restoration of its natural environment.

OASIS

Mauricio Ramírez

Oasis is a hummingbird feeder designed to minimize the risk of contamination commonly found in traditional feeders. Thoughtfully integrated into the garden, it is inserted into soil whether in pots or directly in the ground blending seamlessly with the natural environment. As it becomes yet another "flower" along the bird’s path, Oasis offers both functionality and harmony with the surrounding ecosystem.

Llovizna

Giovanna Pelusi

Llovizna is a passive water dispenser designed for Long-tailed Doves in urban settings. Its construction includes teak wood supports, a pumice filtration system, and traditional materials such as bules, jícaras, and pine fiber weaving.

Mounted on exterior walls, it operates through manual refilling or rainwater capture, offering a low-impact, sustainable hydration source for avian species.

NUDOS

Alexa Paredes

Nudos is a hanging feeder designed for lesser goldfinches, functioning as a space for social interaction while offering an alternative to human-imposed captivity. The piece honors the birds’ innate sociability and freedom, incorporating subtle visual cues such as movement with the wind that signal safety and invitation.

Through its form and intention, Nudos becomes both refuge and celebration of avian community.

COMPAÑEROS

Samantha Lozano

Compañeros is a symbiotic bird feeder designed to provide Mexican finches with a natural source of protein, while respecting their instinctive foraging behavior. Through a harmonious integration of form and function, it encourages direct interaction between finches and surrounding plants, fostering a more balanced and conscious ecological relationship.

Abrevadero

Aaron Cea

Abrevadero is a functional feeder aimed at supporting insectivorous bird species as biological pest control agents. By providing a safe and consistent food source, and through a design that merges into garden ecosystems, it promotes the reduction of chemical pesticide use and reinforces ecological resilience.

MUTUO

Arantxa López

MUTUO is a bird feeder designed to foster a reciprocal relationship between humans and woodpeckers, creating benefits for both. It uses food as a medium to strengthen this connection while enhancing the woodpecker’s natural role as a pest controller, offering an alternative to the use of pesticides.

PICAFLOR

Vanessa Castañeda

Picaflor is a pollinator garden adapted to domestic environments, offering a healthy food source for hummingbirds and other vulnerable species. Made from various forms of coconut fiber, its materiality is both suitable and beneficial for all the species it supports, merging ecological care with thoughtful design.

Alas y Aroma

Vania Cruz

Alas y Aroma is a feeder designed for the Black-headed Siskin, intended as an occasional support rather than a constant food source. Its purpose is to encourage the birds' natural behaviors of exploration and foraging, avoiding dependency and helping them maintain an active, non-sedentary lifestyle.

NECTARIA

Valeria Sánchez

Nectaria is a natural feeder for hummingbirds, carefully designed to allow them to drink nectar directly from the flower without compromising their health. Crafted from chuspata—a type of native bulrush—it features a loop that allows it to be easily hung anywhere within the user's home, blending functionality with organic aesthetics.

Brisa

María Morales

The Long-tailed Woodcreeper exhibits highly mobile and exploratory behavior, which frequently leads to territorial disputes with other bird species. Brisa functions as a nesting refuge, offering structural protection against invasions and contributing to the conservation of local populations in areas where the species has faced significant decline.

Arvendis

Alejandro López

Arvendis hangs gently among the branches—a woven gesture of care. Combining the precision of laser-cut pine with the softness of handwoven jute, it offers refuge from predators while embodying a quiet alliance between design, natural materiality, and the delicate rhythms of avian life.
