FORM, FUNCTION, SENSE AND VALUE (CEM)

FORM, FUNCTION, SENSE AND VALUE

PROFESSOR: MONTSERRAT CASTAÑÓN, LOBSNATH ORTEGA

MODULAR

Modular is a furniture collection built around modular elements made of concrete and ceramic, designed to be configured in multiple ways. Each module combines structural and decorative properties, offering great flexibility in both assembly and use. This versatility encourages creativity and allows the collection to adapt to various contexts and needs, while easily integrating with other materials like wood and metal to create unique compositions.

The project was developed in collaboration with Manufactura Mexicana, an innovation workshop recognized for its focus on applying technologies to construction using experimental materials. This partnership enabled the exploration of new possibilities in modular design through iterative and collaborative processes.

CALLI

CALLI is a modular side table designed for living rooms, composed of organic shapes that give it a unique and natural appearance.

Beyond its practical function, CALLI evokes a deep sense of warmth, becoming a gathering point for families—a safe place to share moments and strengthen emotional bonds.

Its presence brings an atmosphere of familiarity, harmony, and togetherness to any space.

cYMA

Estratos

Viviana Levy Morales, Fernanda Saavedra Aguilera

Estratos is inspired by the formation of geological strata, where each layer tells a unique story. Thus, this furniture is a unique piece, constructed from a ceramic module and the same structural system of rods and surfaces. Although they share a common base, the pieces are configured in different ways, reflecting diversity and transformation (characteristics of the earth). The materials and finishes evoke layers and displacements, making Estratos not just a corner piece, but a manifestation of the passage of time and the transformation of a single identity.

ORILA

Paola Valle, Atzin Rivera

Orila is a bench developed from a modular design exercise, where the repetition of shapes was explored as a tool to generate structure, rhythm, and expression. The project combines banak wood with green-pigmented concrete.

The base module originates from a triangular shape, used as a geometric starting point. Through experimentation with curves, the form evolved to resemble the motion of a wave forming in the sea—an inspiration that gave rise to both the formal concept and the project’s name: Orila, a fusion of the Spanish words for origin (“origen”) and wave (“ola”).

ÓSEO

Karla Durón, Myrna Martínez

The design of Óseo stems from the exploration of anatomy as both structure and metaphor. Like the skeletal system, it seeks to recreate a balance of resistance: porous forms that support voids providing stability, and organic geometries that grow to adapt to the body.

Óseo draws from this internal anatomy as inspiration to reinterpret the relationship between form and function. In this way, the modules simulate trabeculae, vertebrae, and joints that, when connected, generate a structural network.

Xical

Iliana Fernanda Vázquez , Ana Camila Nieves

Born from the concept of duality, the complexity that resides within simplicity and how these two qualities complement each other.

Crafted from banak wood and concrete modules, this credenza creates an appealing visual illusion, appearing to be supported by steel structures that are imperceptible at first glance.
